Not every cracked wheel requires an emergency night-time call-out. We classify an emergency as any situation where your vehicle is stranded or unsafe to drive due to a cracked alloy wheel causing rapid air loss or structural compromise. Common scenarios include: hitting a pothole on the M60 or A6 at night and experiencing immediate tyre deflation; discovering a cracked wheel when changing a tyre late at night with no spare or a space-saver that limits your speed and range; commercial vehicles that cannot wait until morning without losing revenue; or any situation where driving on the damaged wheel would be dangerous.

TIG Welding vs MIG Welding — Why It Matters for Night Repairs

MIG welding applies too much heat too quickly, creating a brittle, porous weld that does not fuse properly to the parent aluminium. The heat-affected zone becomes weak and prone to cracking again within weeks. TIG welding (Tungsten Inert Gas) uses a tungsten electrode to generate precise, controlled heat. The welder can adjust amperage in real time, ensuring deep penetration without overheating the surrounding metal. For alloy wheels, AC (Alternating Current) TIG welding is essential to break through the aluminium oxide layer. We use AC/DC TIG at 150+ Amps with 1.5mm–2mm aluminium-magnesium filler rods that match OEM tensile strengths — creating a weld joint that is often stronger than the original cast wheel.

Can a Welded Alloy Wheel Be Driven Immediately After a Night Repair?

Night-Time Roadside Conditions — What We Need From You

For a safe night-time roadside repair, we require a hard, flat surface with at least 3.5 metres of lateral clearance around the vehicle for safe jacking and wheel removal. We cannot work safely on gravel, mud, grass, or steep slopes, especially at night. The actual welding takes place inside our van’s enclosed workshop bay — so rain, wind, and cold do not affect weld quality. However, we do need safe access to the vehicle and space to position our van alongside it.
